Kuala Klawang
The capital of Jelebu District, and a perfect small town. Kuala Klawang is where the surrounding kampungs come to trade, and where people stop for the food and the durian.
Kuala Klawang is the capital of Jelebu District, and it is a perfect small town. It is the administrative centre, and it is also the hub the surrounding kampungs come to trade in, which is why a place this size has more going on than it looks like it should. The community here is a diverse and harmonious one, and the people are some of the friendliest we have met.
People were living in these hills long before the town. The first were Temuan of the Biduanda tribe. Minangkabau families arrived from Sumatra in the 15th century under the protection of the Melaka Sultanate, and they brought Adat Perpatih with them, the matrilineal custom under which land and title pass down the mother’s line. Jelebu became one of the luak, the old chiefdoms that gave Negeri Sembilan its name, and the custom is still in practice.
That is why the national Customs Museum is in this town rather than in a city. Muzium Adat is run by the Department of Museums Malaysia, it explains Adat Perpatih alongside the customs of Malaysia’s other communities, and entry is free. A short walk away, Bukit Tajali rises 260 metres behind the main mosque, about 5 minutes of stairs, with nearly the whole of Kuala Klawang laid out from the top and a British colonial monument standing on the summit.
Many people stop here for the food. There is Restoran Jelebu and the Swee Wai Coffee Shop in town, and in season the durian is reason enough for the drive on its own.
Kuala Klawang is the mouth of the Klawang, the river the town grew along. What Klawang itself means is not recorded anywhere findable. The district around it has the better story: Jelebu is said to come from jalar labu, creeping gourd, after a farm that people kept gathering at until the name stuck to the place.

Kuala Klawang is about an 1.5hrs from Kuala Lumpur. There are two ways in. The road over Genting Peres from Hulu Langat is the one people drive for fun, winding through the hills, though it is narrow and busy with motorcyclists at weekends. The easier run is through Seremban. Come by car either way. In durian season the roadside stalls along the hill road are part of the trip rather than a detour.
